Earlier this year, District leaders informed us that we had no
business talking about school safety without
data. So, we made a Freedom of Information Act
request for the District's incident
reports. The FOIA allows the district
fifteen days to comply with any informational
request. The District told us it would cost us
~$4600 to complete our request - and asked for
one half of the money as a down payment. We knew
how important this must be, so we paid them.
After waiting about one and a half months, we threatened
legal action if the District did not comply with
the law and turn over the documents. Shortly thereafter, the District
completed our request -- and raised the price of
the report to ~$11,500. We paid their ransom.
What we found was shocking. The report was some
26,000 pages in length! We despaired of ever
getting through all the paperwork, and indeed,
have yet to do so. We have, however, gone
through 2 of the 10 boxes we received from the
District. What follows is the results of our
efforts thus far. In each report that follows,
we sorted by the crime that we believe took
place -- and included the notation for the
District's initial classification of the report.
While we welcome independent State-led
investigation into the matter, we also believe
that the public -- the people who ultimately
fund these schools -- deserve to see why we
believe there is a much bigger problem than the
District has been reporting.
UPDATE -- a parent raised the issue of her
son's safety at the last board meeting. She
indicated that in her son's case,
no incident report was even filled out.
This raises the question "How many criminal acts
were not even included in the information the
District handed over?" Something must change. It
is not enough to continue to sweep problems
under the rug -- eventually you must confront
and work to
fix problems. We NEED a change!
Watch the video to hear her report -- and the
District's response.
Lest anyone think that we dishonestly cut out
responses to the parent, a link to the unedited
end of the board meeting is included here:
